Man with machete confronts police in downtown Oshawa

OSHAWA — A man carrying a machete in the Centre and Gibb streets area of Oshawa prompted a lockdown at Village Union Public School around noon.
The lockdown, instructed by police, was from 11:25 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Police cordoned off several streets in the Centre and Gibb streets area as part of an investigation outside a house on Quebec Street. A police spokesman said officers were in the area for another matter when the man walked out of his house and got into a confrontation with a police officer.
He then walked back into the home, walked out carrying a machete and then walked back into his house.
The tactical unit was called and the man was taken into custody without any injuries at approximately noon, according to an eyewitness.
“I believe it’s about a block away on a neighbouring street,” said Andrea Pidwerbecki, communications manager, Durham District School Board.
She understood some streets were blocked off and the K9 unit was out, Ms. Pidwerbecki said.
The accused is currently out on bail and is represented by counsel, Anser Farooq.
